It was a low, wretched performance, by the network and both candidates, full of fluff and posturing and Alice in Wonderland statements of policy along with an almost complete derogation of authority by the anchors. It marked a low point in our national discourse about world politics.

“The idea that Russia is somehow a friend of ours, or that Putin is a friend is a false narrative.”
“They’re not our friends.”
McCaul’s comments reflect a wide unease within the Republican Party about Trump’s insistent and seemingly unprecedented praise for Putin, a man who usually holds something of a pariah status in U.S. politics.

Vladimir Putin is a strong leader in the same way that arsenic is a strong drink. Praising a brutal KGB dictator, especially as preferable to a democratically elected US president, whether you like Obama or hate him, is despicable and dangerous. Trump and now his running mate, Mike Pence, have repeated and defended their compliments of Putin for “strength”, as if assassination and repression represent something worthy of emulation.
If Trump or anyone else admires Putin’s “strength” then he admires destroying the free press, rigging elections, jailing and killing critics and the political opposition, turning the economy into a crony kleptocracy, invading neighbors, assassination, and committing genocide against civilians. This is Putin’s record, known and documented. This is who Trump admires.
And do not try to defend these statements with semantics or sophistry. Calling a strongman like Putin “strong” is redundant, and so it is praise not for the individual but for dictatorship itself.

On Labor Day, visitors to the Drudge Report, the conservative news aggregator operated by Matt Drudge, were greeted by an above-the-fold story about the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Obama at the G20 Summit in China. Drudge’s headline for the story was “Lion And The Pussycat”:

Never mind that the Russian strongman invaded Ukraine and seized Crimea. Never mind that he supports the butcher Bashar al-Assad in Syria. Never mind that so many of his political opponents end up murdered or imprisoned. Never mind that U.S. officials suspect his government of trying to disrupt our election with cyberattacks. In Trump’s star-struck eyes, all of this makes him “a leader, far more than our president has been a leader.”

Trump said Putin “calls me brilliant.”
This is an imprecise translation of Putin’s actual comments. The word he used was “yarkii,” which means “bright” as in vivid or colorful, not intelligent or clever.
We rate Trump’s claim Mostly False.

Mr. Trump, with all due respect to you as the presidential nominee of the Republican Party, you cannot credibly serve as commander in chief if you embrace Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Russian leader has repeatedly shown himself to be an adversary of the United States. Putin, during his long tenure, has repeatedly pursued policies that undermine U.S. interests and those of our allies and partners. He has steadily but systematically moved Russia from a fledgling democratic state to an authoritarian one. He is the last foreign leader you should be praising.
