Gary Johnson weet niet wat Aleppo is. Blunder of niet? Wat zegt dit over het niveau van de Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen?

Vaak ben ik het eens met The Young Turks. Het combineert maatschappijkritiek met progressieve politiek zonder sektarisch of eenzijdig te worden. Voor The Young Turks is de vijand van de vijand niet per definitie een vriend. Dat is de valkuil voor objectieve journalistiek. Andere nieuwszenders aan de linkerkant van het politieke spectrum maken vaak de simpele fout door tamelijk kritiekloos dat te omarmen dat ook strijdt tegen datgene waar het ook tegen strijdt. Bijvoorbeeld Democracy Now!, The Real News, Counterpunch of WikiLeaks bezondigen zich vaak aan dat simplisme. The Young Turks doet dat nooit, maar houdt altijd het oog op de bal. Obama verkeerd bezig? Ok, maar dat betekent nog niet dat de tegenstander van Obama goed bezig is.

In bovenstaand item ben ik het oneens met Cenk Uygur van The Young Turks die een fout van Gary Johnson zo meent te kunnen ‘spinnen‘ dat het in diens voordeel uitpakt. Dat is hogere wiskunde die daar mijn idee niets met politiek te maken heeft. Maar alles met wensdenken en goedpraten. Uiteraard is het niet meer dan een verschil van mening. Ik meen dat Gary Johnson door niet te weten wat ‘Aleppo’ is door de mand gevallen is als serieuze presidentskandidaat. Als kandidaat van de Libertarian Party met weinig naamsbekendheid heeft hij een verbazingwekkende 10% steun in de peilingen, aldus een bericht in The New York Times. Met 15% steun in peilingen zou hij door de Democratische en Republikeinse partij toegelaten moeten worden tot de presidentsdebatten. In een reactie op het YouTube-kanaal van The Young Turks verwoordde ik mijn kritiek:

What Cenk is saying in defense of Gary Johnson is utter nonsense. Aleppo is not just a city in Syria. Without knowing what Aleppo is one also does not know the European refugee crisis plaguing and dividing the EU since 2015. Without knowing what Aleppo is one does not know the position of German chancellor Merkel and her ‘Wir schaffen das (We handle it) which met lot of criticism. Without knowing what Aleppo is one does not know the details about the battle including the Russian air force bombing hospitals and residential areas without military importance. Without knowing what Aleppo is one does not know what Hezbollah or Iran is doing in Syria. Without knowing what Aleppo is one also does not know what the Turkish interest in Syria is and why the Turkish government of Erdogan was backing ISIS and fighting the Syrian Kurds (YPG) which are the most loyal allies of the US. Without knowing what Aleppo is Johnson indicates he does not know a lot about geopolitics and foreign policy.

Cenk is wrong Gary Johnson is just making ‘a mistake’ by not knowing what Aleppo is. It is far more than that. Cenk himself is making a mistake by making a comparison with Trump or Clinton. Why? When one talks about Johnson one should talk about Johnson. I don’t understand why Cenk is doing this. He is also not sportsmanlike towards Ana who says she thinks Johnson really made a big mistake. It seems Cenk is overruling her. Should Cenk have behaved more restrained? Of course!

The American presidential race is a sad and painful exercise for journalists and public. All the remaining candidates are under average and lack basic judgement. Hillary Clinton is lying and trying to hide her mistakes, corruption and character. And has a secret Kremlin-connection via the Skolkovo Innovation Center. Donald Trump is a clown without any knowledge, insights and sound opinions about the real world and is preferring the authoritarian Putin above the democratically elected Obama. Gary Johnson does not know what Aleppo is and on May 1, 2014 in an interview with the Russian propaganda station Russian Today showed understanding for the illegal annexation of Crimea. Jill Stein in December 2015 visited Moscow and attended a jubilee dinner of that same Russia Today where Vladimir Putin and Trump-surrogate Mike Flynn were also present.
