Het lijkt aardig zo’n objectief ingekleed overzicht van Fox News over de berichtgeving van de impeachment hoorzitting in het Huis met ambassadeur Marie Yovanovitsj op 15 november 2019. Maar het heeft vooral de opzet om te benadrukken dat de Amerikaanse bevolking en media verdeeld zijn over Trumps impeachment. Dat is ook zo. Op dit moment wil ongeveer de helft van de bevolking de president afzetten en de helft niet.
Dat is niet waar het debat om zou moeten gaan. Media moeten de feiten leveren en er duiding aan geven. Daarnaast hebben ze een functie om als venster op de democratie te dienen. Noem het een maatschappelijke verantwoordelijkheid. Om het met een beeld te schetsen: Het land staat in brand en Fox News heeft het over de politieke voorkeur van de brandweerlui en de verslaggevers die verslag doen van de brand. Waarbij de hoofdzaak van de brand zelf volledig uit beeld verdwijnt. Dat is misleiding. Mijn reactie bij deze video:
It’s weird. US national security is at stake and some media and politicians talk about trivialities. They engage in deception. Is that the task of politicians and media? As if FDR, after Pearl Harbor, denies that Japan has attacked the US.
It’s not about Trump or the GOP, it’s about national security, the influence and prestige of the US. The Kremlin pulls the strings and decides what the president does and what he doesn’t. See what Tom Rogan of the conservative Washington Examiner writes about this: “Trump’s impeachment might be left in Vladimir Putin’s hands.” Why do Americans hand over their power to a former KGB person who is a traditional US enemy?
Every politician or medium who justifies and dismisses that is anti-patriotic. It is high time that all politicians and all media unite and put the general interest of their country first. They don’t do that at the moment.
