En volgens steeds meer deskundigen op een beslissende wijze. Zeer waarschijnlijk in samenwerking met binnenlandse, Amerikaanse medewerkers die de Russen van informatie voorzagen. Wat is het behandelplan van een zieke, weerloze democratie die met weinig middelen uit evenwicht kon worden gebracht? Wat is hier aan de hand? Aan welke ziekte leidt de Amerikaanse democratie? Is het alleen aan de oppervlakte of in de kern verrot? Ik vermoed het laatste en wees in een reactie bij deze video op de negatieve rol van het grote geld. Hier valt meer te lezen over het arrest Citizens United v. FEC van 2010 dat de poorten voor het grote geld in de Amerikaanse politiek openzette.

A more interesting question is why American democracy and the electoral system could become so vulnerable. How could it be that the Kremlin could buy and possess the presidency at relatively low cost. Why is American democracy so defenseless? The answer to that question indicates the way to make American democracy resilient, powerful and strong.
That answer should reflect on the power of social media and the undermining role of companies like Facebook, Twitter or Google that do not take responsibility and need to be dealt with under criminal law. But as instruments they never give the complete and ultimate answer.
This should rather be sought in the participation of citizens at the higher levels of politics and the decisive role of the money in both large parties.
The role of big money must be reduced and the participation of ordinary citizens in politics must be increased. This makes the politics and the electoral system resilient and able to cope with unlawful interference of foreign actors, such as the Russian Federation in cooperation with domestic traitors who surrender their country to a foreign power.
