Of course Russian artists and athletes should speak out against the war.
In 2014, 500 athletes and artists spoke positively about the illegal occupation of Crimea by the Russian Federation. Then Russian athletes and artists took a political stand. They can now do that again.
It’s one of two. Or politics has nothing to do with sports and art. Then these athletes and artists should not have publicly supported the occupation of Crimea in 2014. Or politics has to do with sports and art. Then the athletes and artists can speak out against the war started by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
Athletes and artists can also express themselves in a different, more humanistic way if they find it too burdensome to take a political stance against the war.
Namely by speaking out against the violation of human rights during the war, the proven use of cluster munitions and chemical white phosphorus, the destruction of civilian targets of no military significance such as residential flats and the destruction of churches and Ukrainian cultural heritage.
He who is silent agrees. In 2014, the Russian artists and athletes were not silent. Now most of them are silent. They should not be forced to speak out, but should do so from their own conscience, inner civilization and self-protection of their own country.
The credibility of their own country is at stake. By speaking out publicly against the war, they can increase the credibility of their country. That is not easy in an authoritarian country.
But there is no other choice, as Ukrainian sportsmen and artists also spring into action to save their country from the invader. Why do Russian athletes and artists think they can sit on their hands? That is a luxury that no longer exists.
PS: Deze pro-Russische publieke personen hebben zich in 2022 publiekelijk voor de oorlog met Oekraïne uitgesproken:
