President Donald Trump en Senator Ted Cruz (Republikeinen, Texas) hebben elkaar voor rotte vis uitgemaakt tijdens de campagne van 2016. Nu lijken ze een werkbare relatie te hebben. Trump noemt Cruz niet langer Lyin’ Ted, maar Beautiful Ted. Politiek kan het zich niet veroorloven een geheugen te hebben. Trump is afhankelijk van Cruz als de Senaat naar verwachting volgend jaar over de impeachment van Trump stemt. Als 20 Republikeinse senatoren voor impeachment stemmen, dan kan Trump als president worden afgezet.
Op zijn YouTube-kanaal plaatste senator Cruz op 22 november deze video met de titel ‘TIME IS RUNNING OUT, The U.S. Must Stop Nord Stream 2‘. De Senaat gaat over buitenlandse politiek. Cruz pleit ervoor om de aanleg van Nord Stream II te stoppen. Sancties zijn daarbij het middel. Maar in hoeverre meent Cruz wat hij zegt door omcirkelende bewegingen te maken en niet tot de kern te komen? Die kern is namelijk de pro-Russische opstelling van Trump. In mijn reactie bij de video spreek ik Cruz aan op zijn ontwijkende opstelling:
It is nice what you say, Senator, but you know what the real problem is. Namely the relationship between President Trump and the Kremlin. Trump follows the talk points of the Kremlin closely. Trump defends the interests of the Russian Federation harder than those of the US.
It is absolutely true that there is bipartisan support in the Senate for tackling the Russian Federation. But you only show guts if you go against Trump’s delaying actions in the relationship with the Russian Federation. Do you have that guts?
The role of Germany remains underexposed in the video. This country plays a splitting and malicious role within the EU. That even goes so far that the German embassy in Washington, as the direct mouthpiece for the Kremlin, urges the Trump government to postpone sanctions against Nord Stream II, Gazprom and the Kremlin.
Because Trump is doing the Kremlin bidding, it is not to be expected that he will seriously impose sanctions against the construction of Nord Stream II in 2019. Even if the Congress has decided that by a large majority. So if you want to implement those sanctions, then you have to dismantle Trump’s opposition. For example, by organizing a veto that overrules Trump’s pro-Kremlin attitude.
If you do not go too far and tackle the core of the problem, namely the obstruction of Trump, then you know that you are working cosmetically by playing nicely on social media with your indignation about that perfidious Russian Federation and that hesitant and uncertain EU.
Nord Stream II is not in the interest of the US, but also not in the interest of the EU and the people of the Russian Federation. Nor is it in the interest of our planet because an investment of more than USD 10 billion for the construction is not being written off in the short term.
In short, yes, good that you are against the construction of Nord Stream II. But yes, you also know that the biggest obstacle to sanctions is not the Kremlin, Brussels or Berlin, but your own Washington. President Trump is the biggest obstacle that you must solve if you really want Nord Stream II to be stopped. To stop Nord Stream II, you have to stop Trump. It is that simple. And you know it is that simple.
Do you dare to tackle Trump? Or are you afraid of that?
