Vooralsnog reageert de economische en politieke elite van Nederland niet in het openbaar op de recente ontwikkelingen in en van Saoedi-Arabië. Op kamervragen van Lilianne Ploumen (PvdA) en Neelie Kroes (VVD) na die haar werk aan de futuristische stad Neom opschort volgens een bericht in de WSJ van 11 oktober:
Wereldwijd reageren bedrijven en individuen kritisch op de ontwikkelingen in Saoedi-Arabië, maar niet in Nederland. Tot nu toe hebben Nederlandse bedrijven en individuen hun relaties met dit land niet opgeschort of verbroken. Nederland exporteerde in 2016 voor 2,6 miljard dollar naar Saoedi-Arabië. Winstgevendheid en handel gaan bij Nederlandse bedrijven boven alles. Inclusief mensenrechten, ethiek of een goede publiciteit.
De VNO-mentaliteit van zelfoverschatting en eendimensionaliteit van het Nederlandse bedrijfsleven blijkt uit een interview uit 2009 met Jaap Vaandrager op de site van VNONCW naar aanleiding van Wilders‘ film Fitna. Hij zegt: ‘Ik heb meteen een paar Nederlandse ambassadeurs daar gebeld met de mededeling: ‘zeg tegen die Balkenende dat hij die vent aanpakt want dit is heel slecht voor de handel‘. Dit is de omgekeerde wereld waar het bedrijfsleven meent de politiek op te kunnen dragen wat het moet doen. Zo openlijk laat het bedrijfsleven dat bij voorkeur achter de schermen opereert zich niet in de kaarten kijken. Dit is hoe het in werkelijkheid gaat. Men hoeft het niet met Wilders eens te zijn om zich te realiseren dat het ongewenst is dat VNONCW meent de politiek te kunnen bestieren. Zie ook de kwestie van de dividendbelasting die premier Rutte door Unilever en Shell ingefluisterd werd of de steun van de Nederlandse regering voor het gasproject Nord Stream II dat Europa onder druk van de Gasunie en Shell afhankelijker maakt van Russisch gas en fossiele brandstof.

Minister Wopke Hoekstra (Financiën) moet niet naar Saoedi-Arabië afreizen nu dat land de verdenking op zich heeft geladen journalist Jamal Khashoggi te hebben omgebracht. De bewindsman behoort tot de sprekers op een investeringsconferentie in Riyad later deze maand, maar regeringspartij D66 roept hem op af te zeggen.

I am confident that U.S. intelligence agencies have the capability to determine, with a high degree of certainty, what happened to Khashoggi. If he is found to be dead at the hands of the Saudi government, his demise cannot go unanswered — by the Trump administration, by Congress or by the world community. Ideally, King Salman would take immediate action against those responsible, but if he doesn’t have the will or the ability, the United States would have to act. That would include immediate sanctions on all Saudis involved; a freeze on U.S. military sales to Saudi Arabia; suspension of all routine intelligence cooperation with Saudi security services; and a U.S.-sponsored U.N. Security Council resolution condemning the murder. The message would be clear: The United States will never turn a blind eye to such inhuman behavior, even when carried out by friends, because this is a nation that remains faithful to its values.

For decades, Saudi Arabia has been an awkward partner for the U.S., but the relationship was robust enough to endure periods of acute crisis such as September 11. This time, however, the goodwill might finally have run out as politicians and businesspeople have turned on MBS with a speed last seen in the case of Libya’s Saif Gadhafi, another youthful leader-in-waiting championed by his Western supporters as a reforming influence.

The Future Investment Initiative conference, to be held in Riyadh later this month, was rapidly turning into a fiasco on Friday after most media partners and several top business allies pulled out. More were expected to follow. All said they had been disturbed by the circumstances of Khashoggi’s disappearance from the Saudi consulate in Turkey and the lack of credible responses.

Het bedrijfsleven sluit zich bij het kabinet aan. Werkgeversorganisatie VNO-NCW zegt de politiek te volgen en vindt het “economisch dan ook niet in de rede liggen” om te gaan.
