Het blijft onverklaarbaar waarom de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump ruzie maakt met bondgenoten als Canada, Duitsland en Frankrijk en autoritaire leiders van landen als China, de Russische Federatie en Noord-Korea de hemel in prijst. Waar komt Trumps bewondering voor autoritaire leiders vandaan? Dat moet een verklaring in zijn psyche hebben omdat strategische verklaringen tekortschieten. Vooral Trumps benadering van de Russische president Putin is opvallend. Door de inlichtingendiensten en het politieke establishment wordt Putin als bedreiging voor de Amerikaanse democratie beschouwd, maar Trump blijft hem uit de wind houden en heeft nog nooit iets negatiefs over hem gezegd. De ontmoeting met de Noord-Koreaanse leider Kim Jung-un wijst op een publiciteitsstunt, een decor zonder fundament. Buitenstaanders zien met verbazing aan hoe Trump de westerse alliantie kapot probeert te maken en dictators steunt. Hoelang kan dat goed gaan en kan de Republikeinse partij Trump blijven steunen die de Amerikaanse belangen zo beschadigt en de nationale veiligheid van zijn land steeds meer in gevaar brengt? Dat is in strijd met zijn eed op de grondwet.

Opmerkelijk in het NOS-journaal was dat de omroep ‘the Korean peninsula’ consequent vertaalde met ‘Noord Korea’. Het gaat Kim natuurlijk om het verwijderen van zowel zijn eigen als (vooral ook) de Amerikaanse kernwapens op het Koreaanse schiereiland.

Met zijn retoriek en slechte voorbereiding laat Trump China en Noord-Korea winnen en Zuid-Korea verliezen. Het is potsierlijk dat Trump dat als een overwinning claimt.
