Het panel van The Young Turks met Cenk Uygur in een centrale rol kijkt naar de laatste ontwikkelingen in het Rusland-onderzoek door speciale aanklager Robert Mueller en de bekentenis van Mike Flynn dat hij heeft gelogen tegenover de FBI. Het trekt de lijn door en verbindt dat met de financiële transacties van de Trump Organisatie met Russische betrokkenen. Plichtmatig vraagt het zich af of Mueller ernaar kijkt. Sinds de zomer van 2017 is bekend dat dit zo is, zoals uit een bericht van Bloomberg blijkt. Trumps zakelijke contacten met betrokkenen in de Sovjet-Unie en daarna de Russische Federatie dateren van 1987. De logica van Trumps pogingen om zijn belastingaangifte geheim te houden, zijn herhaaldelijke lofuitingen van de Russische president Putin en het in zijn team halen van opvallend veel pro-Russische belanghebbenden leidt irrefutabel tot de conclusie dat Trump in de zak van de Russen zit en in 30 jaar van het Kremlin afhankelijk is gemaakt.

One possibility is that Flynn lied because he was trying to hide a longer course of contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia. An earlier guilty plea elicited by the Mueller team showed that Russia was trying to make contact with the campaign. The more contacts Mueller can show, the closer he is to a narrative that shows conspiratorial cooperation between Russia and Trump.

So what is Mueller’s end game? Assuming he survives in office and doesn’t suffer his own “Saturday Night Massacre,” I think he’s aiming to indict the president of the United States for multiple felonies. Trump’s lawyers know this. They’ve told him what Mueller’s intentions are. Maybe this explains Trump’s wild-eyed endorsement of child-molester Roy Moore in Alabama, his deranged retweeting of anti-Muslim videos from some British neo-Nazi website, and his surreal resurrection of Obama’s alleged Kenyan birth. He can see the end coming, and it’s driving him crazy. President Donald J. Trump knows that he and his White House are surrounded by investigators, and they are asking questions of literally every single person who worked on the Trump campaign and in the Trump White House. He knows, because John Dowd, an old time D.C. lawyer who has been through the wars of Washington scandals, has told him, that once an investigation like Mueller’s starts, you can’t stop it. Like a house of cards collapsing, you can’t move your hands fast enough to grab enough cards to put it back together. It just keeps coming down until the whole thing is on the floor.
