Wat heeft ons ‘A Utrecht Pastoral’ uit 1892 te zeggen?

Schotland ontsluit de nationale kunstcollectie digitaal. Kunstwerken zijn bereikbaar op nationalgalleries.org. Zo ook de foto ‘A Utrecht Pastoral’ van James Craig Annan. Uit de collectie van de Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Een beroemde foto naar het blijkt. In een artikel voor Scherptediepte/ Depth of Field over de blik van buitenlandse fotografen (1890-1930) op Nederland besteedde conservator fotografie van het Rijksmuseum Mattie Boon er in 2012 aandacht aan. Een afdruk ervan is  opgenomen in de collectie van het Rijksmuseum. 

Boon: ‘In 1892, after the first exhibition, The British Journal of Photography praised A Utrecht Pastoral as a ‘characteristic’ Dutch landscape. The tall trees on the left side of the image, the row of sheep along the water and the great masses of cloud formed ‘a most pleasing whole’. It was a ‘soft’ image, without ‘the hardness so often seen in photography’.^[25] Another reviewer praised ‘the band of quiet foreground, which most photographers would trim away as useless […] Its presence greatly adds to the feeling or suggestion of space and scale. The bold and large treatment of the clouded sky space must be noted.’^[26] A third saw chiefly the low light and the long shadows in the bend in the road, and the professional handling of the sky.^[27]‘

Wat kunnen we aan deze typeringen 125 jaar later toevoegen? Het is inmiddels ook een afbeelding van een verdwenen landschap geworden. Een onschuldig landschap dat gethematiseerd wordt door de onschuldige schapen. Een pastorale is een herdersdicht of dorpsvertelling uit het Land van Ooit. De vergleden tijd betrapt.
