Vandaag zijn de Europese Spelen in Baku geopend. Tevens de eerste editie van deze spelen. Meer dan 3000 kilometer verwijderd van Berlijn. Ze werden door het Europees Olympisch Comité bedacht waarvan dit land lid is. Wat heeft Azerbeidzjan met Europa te maken? Soms worden Armenië, Azerbeidzjan en Georgië tot Europa gerekend, maar vaker tot Azië. De VN of het Duitse Ständiger Ausschuss für geographische Namen (StAGN) beschouwen Azerbeidzjan als Aziatisch. Het is lid van de Aziatische Ontwikkelingsbank.
Om historische en cultuurhistorische redenen kan Azerbeidzjan niet tot Europa gerekend worden omdat het nooit deel uitmaakte van de Europese ontwikkeling. In 1920 werd het land ingelijfd bij de Sovjet-Unie. Door etnische banden heeft het een speciale relatie met Turkije. Maar ook dat land dat als bijnaam notabene Klein-Azië heeft is niet Europees, maar Aziatisch. Waarom heeft een dictatuur met een bevolking van 96% moslims dat historisch en geologisch niets met Europa van doen heeft de Europese Spelen toegewezen gekregen?

NOT EVERYONE CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE 1ST EUROPEAN GAMES
June 12-28, the city of Baku in Azerbaijan will host the first edition of the European Games, welcoming 6000 participating athletes from 50 different countries. In hosting the Baku Games, Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbajan, aims to polish his public and international image. The Games will be a fantastic event that hides a grim reality.

Here or there? While the United Nations Statistics Department recognizes Azerbaijan to be part of Asia, the World Factbook lists the country as part of the Middle East, and the EU as part of the European “neighborhood.”
