Update 16 november 2017: Marina Abramamovic heeft 2,2 miljoen dollar opgehaald voor de bouw van het Marina Abramovic Institute. Hyperallergic vraagt zich in een bericht af waar het geld gebleven is. Het project gaat niet door. De 2,2 miljoen is volledig besteed aan een ontwerp en maquette van architect Rem Koolhaas.
Lady Gaga helpt Marina Abramovic met de fondsenwerving voor het Marina Abramovic Institute (MAI) in Hudson, New York. De popdiva gaat uit de kleren voor het goede doel en trippelt bloot door een bos. Er is 20 miljoen dollar nodig om het MAI in 2015 te openen. Dat smeekt om aandacht. Via de fondenwervingssite voor kunstprojecten Kickstarter kan gedoneerd worden in een speciale actie. Heiligt dit doel de middelen? Kunstvol.

Positioneert Lady Gaga zich als rebels? Zo had ik het nog nooit bekeken. Wat ik van haar weet is dat ze via dwarse marketing aan haar loopbaan werkt en uiteindelijk altijd binnen de perken blijft. Ze zou wel gek zijn om echt haar nek uit te steken en zich tegen het establishment af te zetten. Maar heeft Gaga ooit gepretendeerd dat te doen? Ziet Chase Madar geen spoken bij een braaf in de pas lopende popdiva?

‘It is a grotesque fact of life that most arts organizations assume they will attract people who are willing to accept less pay than they’re really worth, and that this is systematically figured into their budgets. The market has never been more flooded with capable, well-educated people who are trying to work in contemporary art, and it isn’t much to ask Abramovic to reciprocate at least some of their idealism and goodwill. If she feels entitled to having four qualified applicants under her employ, then she should recognize that they have entitlements of their own. Not all of the organizations with postings on NYFA offer salaries and benefits appropriate for an able-minded college graduate. Marina Abramovic can.’

On Sunday, the New York Post ran a story called “The Art of the ‘Steal,’” questioning what exactly Marina Abramović has done with the $2.2 million she raised to build her art center in Hudson, New York. Over the past four years, Abramović racked up $1.5 million in private donations and another $661,452 on Kickstarter; when she discovered last month that the total cost of building the center would be $31 million, she abandoned it. (A spokesperson for the artist said the funds had paid for the design fee from Rem Koolhaas’s firm, OMA.) According to the Post, Kickstarter donors complained of not receiving their promised rewards and demanded to know how their money had been spent.
